Patriots @ Broncos open thread
OK, Patriot Nation, this is a big one.
Win, and go into the desperately needed bye week at 4-2 with a smoother road a head.
Lose, and you head in 3-3, and the road gets a lot more uphill.
Let's here it for the local brusing Bronco busters!

Lot of controversy at the end of some of these games. The call in San Antonio (New Orleans vs. Altanta) was certainly questionable -- at best.
Miller has looked like a pro golfer, dropping punts inside the 5 and having them stop or bounce back. And a great job by the defense on their first series.
I was surprised to hear this is the first time Plummer has faced the Patriots. Hadn't heard that anywhere before. Belichick usually has his way with QBs who have never seen his defenses up close. ... Hey, Denver defense is really helping out early with a few penalties.
I love Belichick's gamesmanship, asking for that measurement. And it really miffed Shanahan. I wonder if Dillon will play "if necessary" later in the game? Zereoue not exactly tearing it up.
I hate wasting timeouts in those 4th-and-inches situations, despite Denver's early propensity to jump offside.
3-0. Not great, but we'll take the points. Important to get on the board first, especially on the road, especially at a place like Mile High.
The Patriots already have 7 players with ball touches in the game. Denver: 3. (Granted, the Pats have had a few more offensive plays.)
Plummer really sacrificed his tight end there. Great hit by Samuel. Denver is killing themselves with penalties. Keep it up, Broncs!
Pretty good first quarter. I'd be happy with playing the field position game all day.
So much for the field position game. I was afraid someone would finally expose the defensive secondary. Pats are going to have to get the offense going and put up some points.
O line needs to do a better job protecting Brady. Looks like Dwight really misjudged that long pass. Good thing Denver continues to commit all those penalties.
Yes, Denver has one of the league's best run defenses, and the Pats have been less than stellar running this season. The O line is getting overpowered, and that's going to be difficult to overcome.
Starks again. Where's Hank Poteat? What's Belichick going to do to stop this? What can he do?
Yep. Two passes for 125 yards and now a touchdown. Who else can you put in?
Bruschi cleared to play by the team and all those doctors. Nice.
Well, it all starts with line play. The O line isn't protecting Brady or opening holes for the backs. The D line isn't getting pressure on Plummer and barely holding up against the run. The longer they're on the field, the worse that will get. ... Of course, now they sack Plummer, so ... they need to do more of that.
You can't see Givens right hand in any of these shots. It could be under the ball. Simms is making a judgment solely on Givens' left hand being off the ball. I don't think there's "irrefutable" evidence to overturn, but it probably will be.
Nice run by Brady. Great heads up play.
How the heck do they charge the Pats with a timeout while the play is being reviewed? By the way, Simms doesn't know the rules of the game. Obviously doesn't know that an elbow down is the same as a knee.
Not sure what you mean about Brown. He's leading the team in tackles today.
Great. No timeouts left. Pats really got screwed by the officials.
Well, if that's not adding insult to injruy! Denver, notorious for being dirty players, and one of the Patriots getting ejected! Nothing's going right at all. This is just like last year at Pittsburgh. Of course, everything went pretty well after that. Try to get through the second half without any more damage, and get out of here.
This is going from bad to worse. Just have to hope neither Brady nor anyone else gets killed.
Heard a lot before the season about all these Denver defensive players being Cleveland rejects and how they can't be any good. Looks like those people were completely wrong. Let's see, Denver about to be 5-1; Browns are 2-3?
If replay is ever going to work properly, the networks have to back their cameras off about 10%-20% so you can actually see the play within the frame.
Hmmm ... A 2-score game going into the 4th Q ...
I'll say nothing else.
Looked short on the replay they showed too.
There's NO WAY he made it to the 30! Maybe his shoulder did, but the football didn't. Simms and (Who is that? Walt Coleman?) are blind, and Simms is just rooting for Denver (as usual).
I didn't see two men moving on that alleged penalty .... OH! Deion just missed that!
Simms, once again, doesn't know the rules, ignores that he got both feet in, just outright pulling for the Broncos.
Even if Denver had challenges, (A) he got both feet down, and (B) you can't challenge the judgment of being pushed out of bounds.
hosed by the officials again?
Tough call on the Branch incompletion. A lot of tough calls, really. A couple bounces, calls either way and it could have been different. However, that was a pretty valiant comeback effort, and I think it bodes well for the future following the bye. I know what Belichick is going to say: "They made more plays than we did."
I still don't know what you're talking about with Chad Brown and Beisel. They were 2nd and 4th in tackles today, and Beisel forced the Tatum Bell fumble (even though Denver recovered). Besides, tackling is hardly the problem here. It's pressure on the quarterback and not giving up big plays, both of which the Patriots failed at miserably today as they have for a few weeks now. The defense needs work, no doubt. Hopefully, Bruschi can be ready for Buffalo, and hopefully, the bye week is adventageous.
Isn't Belichick great in these post-game press conferences? All these hack "reporters" in there tossing softballs, and Belichick just drilling them up the middle back at the pitcher. Don't they know what to expect, especially after a loss? And can't they prepare some somewhat intelligent questions to ask? Every week, the same questions; every week, the same answers. They get stonewalled, and not a single one of them brings a ladder.
Steve DeOssie is the only one with a brain in the studio on the 5th Quarter.
